The Junk Wax Era (1986–1994) flooded the market with baseball cards, making most of them cheap and easy to find. But a few slipped through the cracks—cards so rare that even veteran collectors aren’t sure they’re real. Here are five of the rarest baseball cards ever made.

1990 Donruss Brian Downing “Diamond Kings” – With a Twist

Brian Downing’s Diamond Kings card comes in two 1990 Donruss versions: one showing him batting left-handed, the other right-handed. Both were illustrated—and signed—by iconic artist Dick Perez. But the left-handed version stands out for a strange reason: Perez’s signature is printed backward due to a factory error. Even more intriguing? Downing, who’s signed plenty of cards in his career, never autographed this one. If a legit signed copy ever surfaces, it could be worth a serious chunk of change.

1991 Pacific Prototype Rickey Henderson

Pacific tested a bold new card design in 1991 with a 10-card prototype set featuring Rickey Henderson, Frank Thomas, and Dwight Gooden. Only 20 sets were printed, making them ultra-rare. There’s also a Spanish-language version that’s just as scarce—and Henderson fans have been hunting for it for decades.

1991 Upper Deck Michael Jordan Baseball Card

Before he tried his hand at baseball, NBA legend Michael Jordan showed up in Upper Deck’s 1991 baseball set. His SP1 card was a surprise insert, showing up in just 1 out of every 72 packs. Standard versions still float around for about $20, but PSA 10-graded copies (flawless condition) now sell for over $400—and rising.

1991 Topps Desert Shield Chipper Jones Rookie

Chipper Jones’ 1991 Topps rookie card is one of the most mass-produced cards of all time. But there’s a hidden gem: the Desert Shield edition, made to honor troops during the Gulf War. Only about 6,000 were printed and handed out to soldiers. Today, a PSA 10 can hit $10,000 at auction. Even lower-grade versions are worth several hundred bucks.
