This Dive Is Why Matt Besler Is Suspended For The Mexico Match
USMNT defender Matt Besler was carrying a yellow into Friday's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. One more, and he'd have to sit out the next match. This is how he "earned" it.
Costa Rican striker Joel Campbell drew a foul in the 78th minute with this flop that was as hammy as it was effective. You've got to love him going down in a heap, briefly recovering enough to make sure the official notices his pain, then dropping again.
Jürgen Klinsmann saw the dive after reviewing footage of the match, telling reporters yesterday that "the foul on Matt Besler was not a foul, [Campbell] faked it." Obviously. But there's nothing that can be done. Per the rules, the on-field decision cannot be protested.
So Besler will miss Tuesday's qualifier against Mexico. Did we mention it was a Mexican officiating crew who carded Besler?
