I Fucking Live For Haunting Covers Of Literally Any Song In Movie Trailers
You want to see the shit I fucking live for? It’s right here:
No, I do not live for the new trailer of what I am pretty sure is the ninth Transformers movie nobody ever asked for. What I extremely live for is the song accompanying this trailer, which is some kind of distorted, haunting version of “Do You Realize??” by the Flaming Lips. Ah Christ, we’ve got some sad, repetitive piano in there, too. This is the good shit.
Every movie trailer does this now, and I love it so much. Give me a few spare piano notes as images of desolate landscapes flash on screen, give me a sad child singing a stripped-down rendition of any song—any song! Do fucking “Mickey” by Toni Basil, I fucking dare you—and then finish it all off with some Inception BRAAAAHHHHMMMMMS, and I’m good to go.
Now, for some of my favorite movie trailers featuring a haunting cover of literally any song. We have to start by paying respects to the godfather of this shit:
Hell yeah. Now gimme something that’s even more on the nose:
I bet you won’t see this one coming:
Right now you’re wondering if any movie has done this with “When The Saints Go Marching In.” You bet they have, buddy:
This works really well with disaster movies:
See, they took an upbeat song like “California Dreamin’” and made it sad and then set it to images of mass death and suffering. That, my friends, is extremely good and evocative.
Of course, Suicide Squad did it best:
I’m probably going to see Assassin’s Creed when it comes out, because I’m likely to see any movie that features Michael Fassbender and good stabs, but there’s no chance I would miss it if this trailer featured a weeping lady singing “I Am A God” instead of Kanye West:
This is just my opinion about the movie industry, but: Folks, keep it coming.
Update (2:57 p.m.): As has been pointed out to me in the comments and on Twitter, I totally forgot about Zero Dark Thirty. Please accept my sincere apologies, and enjoy this extremely dank cover of “Nothing Else Matters.”
