Potato Chip Ad Manages To Titillate, Enrage Island Nation
Hunky Dory, an Irish potato chip syndicate, has come under fire for an ad series that claims they are "Proud Sponsors of Irish Rugby." That, and because the ads feature all the scantily-clad women's rugby action you could ask for.
The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) said the sponsorship line wrongly implied the company was a major donor to the game.
"This advertising campaign is in very bad taste and one which the IRFU would not want to be associated with in any way," spokesman Padraig Power said.
"Its blatant exploitation of women is tasteless and base, and quite simply unacceptable.
"Irish Rugby has a strong family focus and would not tolerate any connection with such an approach".
The IRFU's lawyers have contacted Hunky Dory's mother company, Largo Foods, and asked for the immediate withdrawal of the ads as since they have "the potential to undermine the legitimate claims of the many genuine sponsors and supporters" that have made rugby such a smashing success in Ireland. Whether or not the IRFU is upset about the lack of a cheesecake flavor remains unknown.
The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland (ASAI) has also been notified and has so far and has received complaints from "more than 20 people."
When are people going to realize that island nations just prefer to mix their love of kinda-maybe exploiting women and funny sports?
