Prosecutors: Jared Remy Assaulted Girlfriend Days Before Killing Her
Jared Remy was arrested for beating his girlfriend on Tuesday and released with no bail the next day. Jennifer Martel returned to their house to retrieve her belongings last night, her mother says, and that's when Remy allegedly stabbed her to death.
Remy is accused of murdering Martel, the mother of his four-year-old daughter, at their Waltham, Mass., home last night. Prosecutors "did not do their job," Martel's mother told the She would be alive today if they had put him away."
The district attorney said the decision to release Remy "was made based on a totality of the circumstances, the singular count in that case as well as conversations with investigating officers and Ms. Martel."
According to records, Jared Remy had had 15 criminal cases out between 1998-2011, including a 2005 incident in which he was accused of beating a girlfriend, which resulted in a restraining order.
Patty Martel said her daughter told her she was "planning my escape" from Remy after he assaulted her on Tuesday.
“She went back to the house to go get stuff and that’s when he killed her,” she said. “And that’s why he killed her, because she called the cops on him.”
WBZ's Karen Anderson is livetweeting Remy's arraignment on murder charges:
The son of longtime Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, Jared was fired from his job as team security in 2008 after being implicated in steroid use.
