One of our best friends went to Davidson, and, not wanting to dare to miss history, booked a whirlwind trip from Columbia, Missouri to Detroit yesterday. We've made similar, holy shit we have to BE there sports trips before, and they rarely turn out well. It's one thing to take a crazy 24-hour jaunt to see your team play an important game; it's another to take that same trip home after they've lost.
After Davidson's crushing loss yesterday — and, anti-Bill Self biases aside, we were legitimately crestfallen — we emailed our friend our condolences. He replied, probably from the road somewhere: "I might be able to talk about it some day. Damn close, but I guess nerves finally caught up to them." That seemed about right; that last possession just seemed God-sent for a last second Stephen Curry game-winner, but, sadly, basketball games involve real people, not storylines created just for us. Curry panicked and picked up his dribble, and not only did he not get a good shot, he didn't get a shot at all.
We'll be looking at each of the Final Four teams today, and we're pretty certain next weekend's games will be more entertaining than either of the last two Final Fours. But Davidson's loss cost us something vital and permanent. Yes, it's impressive, the first time four No. 1 seeds made it. But you won't be saying in 10 years, "remember that season that all the top seeds made it?" You might have said that, however, about Davidson. Alas. What's a Final Four without underdogs look like? We might be able to talk about it someday, but as for now, don't even start.

Tim Donaghy shakes his head at your ignorance.
I don't know. I was rooting for Davidson pretty hard, but the next 3 games should be very good. It is a rarity for all #1 seeds to make it, so we may be talking about it in 10 years.
I think the rush wore off and too many big games in a row got to the Wildcats. That said, if Curry stays, another deep run could happen next year.
On the other side of the coin...I'm glad Davidson broke their hearts. It was kinda weird to root on Goliath for once.
Should have been you, taunting Jayhawk fans.
Haven't been this crushed and shocked by an ending involving a Davidson since The Crying Game.
16.6 left and that's the best shot you can get....
YOU'RE KILLIN ME, SMALLS!
I don't understand why Richards (the NCAA leader in assists all season) didn't bring the ball up with everyone else setting a pick for Curry to get him open. That's how he's been scoring all tourney.
/very disapointed I won't be hearing Gus Johnson say "the white lobster!!" anymore
Awwwwww.
@martyfunkhauser: agreed - it looked like they wanted to get up a quick three and have a shot at a rebound. Panic! At the Detroit.
@Afino: It was probably covered better somewhere else, but curry's missed three on the steal/breakaway at 54-58 was the real heartbreak.
@martyfunkhauser: I agree completely. I also thought they should have crossed the timeline before they used the time-out. I don't know why they didn't screen with a big either. Lots of stuff I didn't get about that last possession, but it was a great run for them.
@Dead Wrestlers Society: Actually, it's not just a rarity...it's never happened before. So, there's that.
I'm looking forward to the games...and to all the proceeding years of picks where idiots will go with the chalk just because of this year's outcome.
I am actually not sure Gus would have survived a Davidson buzzer-beater. Spontaneous human combustion is real, people.
@UkraineNotWeak: +1.
Although I've also been heartbroken by a Davidson when the contestant I'm rooting for takes Shadoe Stevens to block, but instead I hear "sorry, circle gets the square."
"It's one thing to take a crazy 24-hour jaunt to see your team play an important game; it's another to take that same trip home after they've lost."
Ohio State fans go through this at least once a year.
I think if I was a Davidson fan, I would have probably wanted to stay in Detroit yesterday. Not only was that last play terribly designed, but the Jayhawks did play great defense. They knew just what was coming.
Get ready for a week of interminable "Roy Williams vs. his former team" story lines...
I don't know....everyone seems to be saying that "all the big games caught up with them" or that "their nerves finally came through" and things along those lines. If that were true, they wouldn't have taken the #1 team in the region down to the wire. The simple fact is that Kansas was all over Curry on that last possession, someone else had to shoot, and they missed. That's not nerves- it's basketball.
Having said that, I think every non-KU basketball fan was legitimately crushed with the outcome. So close, and yet so far.
@VTBen: I think if I was looking to get shot, I would have probably wanted to stay in Detroit yesterday.
Fixed
Its too bad, really, because the media cock slobbered contest between Curry and Hansborough would have been a battle of the media cliche titans.
Now Tyler will have all those mouths to himself. And now I will have to watch the games on mute.
@VTBen: I think Calipari and the whole free-throw issue wins for interminable story line this week.
@theballadofrickeyfoggie:
He can't make them all.
Although yes, everyone and their brother was waiting for that to go down.
I was suprisingly disappointed given that I usually don't give a shit about college baskatball. But I was rooting for Davidson. The missed 3 on the breakaway crushed me. Ugh, and that last play. And while we're on the subject, where is Davidson?
"Pillar of Davidson", anyone? The Jayhaaaaaawk won't leave me alone, he's in my face and I...
@Carmen McFanzone: Only if you're a Spinal Tap drummer.
Oh Christ, I meant basketball !!! I can spell, I swear!
@Zach Parise's Shorty: Just north of Charlotte.
@MeSoHornsby: That's why I was implying I would have wanted to stay in Detroit...
I like to look on the bright side. With Curry being in 10th Grade, he'll get 5 or 6 more shots to make it to the Final Four.
In other news - there are reports that Rice is making a play for Davidson's Coach McKillop.
If he does what he just did, knows he'll have one of the country's best players for at least one more year, and then bolts for CUSA bottom feeder Rice, he automatically should be banned from coaching at prestigious private colleges and universities.
Curry panicked and picked up his dribble, and not only did he not get a good shot, he didn't get a shot at all.
No surprise that this all happened at Ford Field, where Lions fans have been used to this type of disappointment for years.
@The Gentleman Masher: I can't see McKillop bolting. He's been at Davidson for years now and knows the SoCon is a weak league. He's at a school with some tradition and doesn't have to fight with football to be top dog. My money is on him staying.
I'd love to see a "Worst Final Plays by a losing team ever" list, I'd have to put that game on the list. Did Curry really need to bring the ball across the court? Wouldn't it have been better to have your PG try and....you know.....do what point guards do and hit Curry after he has a shot set up? I'm not saying Curry would have magically been open, but at the least it wouldn't have resulted in an impromptu airball from the little white dude.
I hope ESPN isn't reading my list suggestion either. I don't want to hear Skip Bayless & Rob Parker argue about it on Sportscenter when all I want to see are some NBA highlights.
@MoClarettMoProblems: Not a KU fan, but definitely NOT rooting for Davidson. I like Cinderella runs, and routinely root for the underdogs, but the Final Four should be for the best of the best.
@MeSoHornsby: How original.
@Jews For Purple Jesus: *sigh* How completely correct.
Legitimately crushes when Richards threw up the brick.
That. Absolutely. Sucked.
On so many levels.
Plus, the guy's from Columbia. He's been living in a town that hates Kansas for God-knows-how-long...it's like he's going from one crappy scenario to the next.
And oh yes, @PeteJayhawk: -1.
Hey fellas, the comments about Roy Williams or about Memphis' free throws won't be interminable - they'll end Saturday.
college basketball? whats that?
/frickinmsu
McKillop's turned down offers from better places than Rice. He's not going anywhere.
It's a shame that part of this awesome run that I'll remember is Gus Johnson... although I guess he was entertaining. I would love to meet whoever told them that they call Bryant Barr the White Lobster. He *is* from Maine, you know...
So many things could have changed the outcome. Lovedale doesn't commit a dumb foul... Sander makes a couple of FTs. They play the game in a place designed for, uh, basketball...
I live in Davidson and I can tell you this town will never forget this run. Amazing in a way that it could never be at a big school.
@VTBen: I don't care who you're a fan of, you NEVER want to stay in Detroit.
@VTBen: agreed. Curry missing the three on the break was the real dagger. And Davidson played great D on the possession to setup the last shot. Let's no chalk this up to nerves - they went toe to toe with many top teams this year and just didn't get a good look on the last series.
Curry would be a fool to stay (see Leinart, Matt on how not to capitalize on huge collegiate fame), but if he does they should play on the second weekend again.
I was pulling for Davidson as much as anyone, but I hate hearing this sort of crap from fans of the little guy.
Amazing in a way that it could never be at a big school..how do you know? You don't think that it was amazing last year at Wazzu? Or if Northwestern somehow ever pulled this off?
The cinderella team, so often such an amazing story...that they think they're better than everyone else. Happens every year.
/Mad that Curry missed the OBVIOUS cutter at 7 seconds left.
@Bob_Marley_and_the_Hartford_Whalers: I am with you. I will always remember the Hoosiers making the final game in 2002, as an underdog. It was quite amazing.
@The Gentleman Masher: I thought baseball was bigger than football and basketball at Rice.
@Bob_Marley_and_the_Hartford_Whalers: Well, I think I know because I went to a big school and then worked and lived at a small school.
But I see your point. I was a little carried away with the excitement. I didn't mean to take anything away from other underdogs. It's cool whereever it happens -- and it's fun to be in the middle of it.
Recruiting will be vastly different for McKillop, other Davidson coaches, and even the Admission office over the next few years. The school and town will be changed by this season more than they would have been at a larger place. How's that?
