How the winner of the Golden Boot award is determined

The Golden Boot is awarded to the top World Cup goalscorer. This sought-after award was first introduced in 1982 and was originally named the ‘Golden Shoe’. However, ahead of the 2010 World Cup, FIFA officials decided that ‘boot’ was the more appropriate term, and it was renamed accordingly.

While the Golden Boot is the top award, the next two highest scoring players receive the Silver Boot and Bronze Boot, respectively. To date, no player has won the Golden Boot award more than once, although some, including Miroslav Klose and Brazil’s Ronaldo, have come close.

There has been some controversy over the years, especially so when two players scored an equal number of goals. In 1994, this led to the addition of a new rule. If two (or more) players have scored the same number of goals, the player with more assists wins the award, as determined by the FIFA Technical Study Group.

Who are the Golden Boot favorites?

Many of the best online sportsbooks already have early markets for this year’s World Cup Golden Boot winner. Let’s break down the top contenders for the prestigious award.

Kylian Mbappe (France)

The French superstar is the odds-on favorite to take home his second Golden Boot award after winning it in 2022 with 8 goals, including a hat trick in the final. It’s easy to understand why. He has topped both La Liga and the Champions League this season in goals and enters the tournament in top form.

France is also widely expected to make a deep run, with anything other than an appearance in the final being a disappointment. The only thing that could hold Mbappe back is France’s incredible other attacking options taking away goal opportunities.

Harry Kane (England)

England’s all-time leader in goals is set up to have another standout World Cup. Kane is in the running for the Ballon d’Or after eclipsing 50 goals in a season for the first time in his career. The Bayern Munich star has also won the Golden Boot before in 2018.

England isn’t the most aggressive attacking team, but Kane is their unquestioned top option in front of goal and penalty taker. If England has another deep run in them, Kane is going to be hard to beat for the Golden Boot.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Messi has more career accolades than you can count, but the Golden Boot has eluded him. He came close in 2022, with his 7 goals only trailing Mbappe. Even at 38 years old, Messi is still Argentina’s primary goal scorer. He racked up 8 goals in qualifying, the most of any player in his region. If Messi scores 4 more goals, he’ll actually become the World Cup’s top all-time goal scorer.

While Argentina isn’t the favorite to retain its crown, it should make a solid attempt at it. It would be a shock if the team doesn’t at least make the quarter finals, so Messi should have plenty of chances to find the net. A drawback of betting on Messi for the Golden Boot is that Argentina might rest him in the group stage whenever a game is won or qualification is secured.

Erling Haaland (Norway)

Haaland is set to make his World Cup debut after a spectacular qualifying campaign. The Man City star found the net 16 times in just 8 games, taking his international total to 55 goals in 49 appearances. Haaland is also Norway’s designated penalty taker. So, it’s easy to understand why many are tipping him to top the World Cup scoring charts despite not playing for one of the favorites.

Norway is viewed as a team capable of making a surprise run, though. So while Haaland will need to do most of his work in the group stages to win this award, there is a decent chance Norway gets a couple of knockout games to help boost his tally.

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

The Spanish youngster rounds out the top five favorites for the Golden Boot. Yamal is only 18 years old, but he’s already integral to Spain’s bid to fulfill its role as tournament favorites. While this is his first World Cup, Yamal was crucial to Spain winning Euro 2024, so he won’t be intimidated by the bright lights. He also put together a great campaign, leading Barcelona in goals and scoring 16 times in La Liga.

The Barcelona star’s season was cut short by a hamstring injury, but he’s expected to be ready for the World Cup. He could have a reduced role early on, though, so keep that in mind. But Yamal should be able to make up for any lost game time thanks to Spain’s great chance of making it to the final.

Previous Golden Boot winners

We’ve added the last five World Cup Golden Boot winners in the table below, where you’re sure to see some familiar names. It’s also interesting to note that the number of goals each player scored has gradually risen in the last 20 years. With an expanded World Cup format, it’s likely we will get even more goals scored by the winner this year, which would make an interesting bet.

The superstars have lived up to expectations in this World Cup’s Golden Boot race. Messi has turned back the clock and is just clear of his rivals with 8 goals, despite missing two penalties. France’s Kylian Mbappe is just behind with 7 goals, and France’s status as favorites means he just trails Messi at +140 even though he’s a goal behind.

Haaland’s odds surged after he scored his third brace of the tournament against Brazil, bringing him level with Mbappe. Unfortunately for Haaland,

Here are FanDuel’s odds, taken on July 8, for the top seven candidates.

Tips for World Cup Golden Boot betting

Focus on top teams

It doesn’t matter how good a goal scorer a player is, they still need to go on a deep tournament run to stand a chance of winning the Golden Boot. Since 1998, every Golden Boot winner has played for a team that at least made the quarterfinals.

Pick penalty takers

Goals are not always easy to come by in tournament football, so we recommend going with players that are their team’s designated penalty taker, such as Harry Kane. When one goal nearly always makes the difference in winning this award, a penalty or two could be key.

Focus on the group stage

As the tournament goes on, goal scorers play tougher and tougher defenses. But with an expansion of the teams, groups are filled with much weaker competition than before. Pick top goal scorers who will be playing in the least competitive groups.

Pros and cons of Golden Boot betting

Changes to the 2026 FIFA World Cup format

As we’ve already mentioned briefly, 2026 sees a substantial number of changes being made to the FIFA World Cup format, the first since 1998 in fact. Naturally, this will make it even more challenging when it comes to FIFA World Cup betting, but in turn, the odds available will be even more competitive.

This year’s extended tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, and it looks set to be more exciting than ever, so here we’ll take a look at what has changed for 2026.

Three host countries for 2026

The FIFA World Cup has historically been hosted by a single country since it first began in 1930. The only exception being the 2002 tournament, which was jointly hosted by Japan and South Korea. But this year we see a new approach with three countries being awarded hosting rights: Canada, Mexico, and the USA. A trend that looks set to continue in the future.

More countries taking part this year

The number of countries putting up a team for the World Cup has also increased from 32 to 48. All players taking part will be released by their respective clubs as of May 25, 2026, bar a few exceptions for players who are needed for competition finals.

12 Groups, a new round, and more matches

This year, there will be 12 Groups of four teams for the World Cup, plus there will be an extra Round of 32 which will encompass the two top teams in each Group and the best eight third-placed teams.

The total number of matches will also increase from 64 to 104. Although every team will still play three Group matches, the number of matches played by teams who reach the final four will go up from seven to eight.

More opportunities to bet on the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Of course, with more Groups, teams and matches this time you won’t need to confine yourself to betting on the World Cup winner, and we’ll go through some of the other opportunities a little later in our guide.

Other FIFA World Cup awards

Of course, the Golden Boot isn’t the only award handed out after the World Cup. In fact, there are several others you will be able to bet on at selected sportsbooks. Here we’ll take a look at those you are most likely to find.

The Golden Ball

Another popular wagering opportunity you’re likely to come across at betting sites is the World Cup Golden Ball award. At the end of the World Cup, the FIFA Technical Study Group draws up a shortlist of the 10 players considered to be the ‘best’ based on their overall performance across the tournament.

The list is made public at this stage, and is then handed over to accredited media representatives who each cast their votes. Ultimately, the Golden Ball goes to the player who receives the most votes, with the second and third-placed contenders receiving a Silver or Bronze Ball, respectively.

The Golden Ball award is sponsored by Adidas, and it was first introduced ahead of the 1982 World Cup, which also marked the start of the brand’s ongoing collaboration with FIFA.

World Cup yearGolden Ball winnerPlaying position
2006Zinedine ZidaneAttacking Midfield
2010Diego ForlanCenter Forward
2014Lionel MessiForward
2018Luka ModricMidfield
2022Lionel MessiRight Wing

As you can see from the above table, Lionel Messi is the only player to have won the Golden Ball twice, and most interestingly, he did so from different playing positions. The other notable winner actually dates back to 2002 when Oliver Kahn won the Golden Ball; to date, he is the only Goalkeeper to do so.

The Golden Glove

This award started out as the Lev Yashin Award in 1994. Yashin is considered to be the GOAT of goalkeepers and is remembered for his athleticism and unique approach to his role, which led to him winning a string of awards.

In 2010, the name of the award was changed to the Golden Glove, in keeping with the other major World Cup awards. The FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG) is solely responsible for deciding who should win the award, based on both quantitative data and its objective viewpoint.

The main criterion is “Outstanding performance throughout the entire tournament” rather than just ‘clean sheets’. In order to make their decision members of the TSG panel review every game in the tournament, considering factors like the goalie’s overall impact on each result, and performance under pressure, before casting their votes.

In the event of a tie, the following factors are used to determine the winner:

  • The goalkeeper whose team progressed furthest
  • Total number of saves
  • Total minutes played

The Best Young Player award

This World Cup award was introduced by FIFA ahead of the 2006 edition. The Best Young Player trophy is awarded to the best player in the tournament who is aged 21 years, or younger. Incidentally, a player’s eligibility is determined by their age on 1 January, meaning this year’s contenders will be players born in 2005 or later.

Due to massive interest in this particular award following the 2006 World Cup, FIFA commissioned a survey to select the best young player from 1958 to 2002, which is posted on their website.

Looking at both the ‘official’ results, and those from the survey, which together span 17 World Cups, six players were 21 years old, and eight were aged 20. The remaining three players were names you’ll be certain to recognize:

  • 1958 – Pele aged 17 years
  • 1998 – Michael Owen aged 18 years
  • 2018 – Kylian Mbappe aged 19 years

The World Cup Fair Play Trophy

Rather than being based on the entire tournament, only teams that progress to the second round are considered for the World Cup Fair Play Trophy. This award was first introduced in 1970, and it largely takes into account each team’s disciplinary record and point deductions.

Within the scope of World Cup matches, points are deducted as follows:

  • Yellow card: 1 point deduction
  • Indirect red card / two yellow cards: 3 point deduction
  • Direct red card: 4 point deduction
  • Yellow card and direct red card: 5 point deduction

Peru were the recipients of the first World Cup Fair Play award in 1970, as they managed to play through the entire tournament without receiving any cards. Brazil holds the record for the most awards, having won four times in 1982, 1986, 1994, and 2006.

The winning team receives the trophy and $50,000 worth of equipment for youth development, with every player and team official receiving a diploma and medal.

Player of the Match

There is a separate Player of the Match award for every match played during the World Cup. This concept was first introduced in 2002, and billed as ‘Man of the Match’, and was renamed shortly before the 2022 tournament.

Recipients in 2002 and 2006 were determined by the FIFA Technical Study Group, but since 2010, winning players have been selected based on the number of votes they receive via an online poll, which can be found on the official FIFA website.

Based on their performance during World Cup tournaments from 2006 to 2022, two players are the clear leaders in this category:

PlayerWorld Cup yearsTotal Player of the Match awards
Lionel Messi2010. 2014, 2018, and 202211
Cristiano Ronaldo2010. 2014, 2018, and 20227
