Up until this morning, this was what the new Ernie Banks statue looked like in front of Wrigley Field. Yes, they missed an apostrophe.
This morning, though, some intrepid copy editing chiseler went in and fixed it. It's a shame; we liked the idea that Ernie Banks was physically allowing the Cubs to play two. He's that important.
Ernie Banks Update: They Fixed The Statue [We Are The Postmen]

Man, their so stupid in Chicago.
That's just silly.
Why would you give a statue to a minority?
Of course he's that important. He appears around town with a baseball cap that makes sure everyone knows that he is "Ernie Banks -- Mr. Cub."
Whats the big deal?
All the questions in that Jeopardy category are about homophones.
The Mark McGwire statue says "I'm not here to talk about the passed."
I'm surprised they knew how to spell "two"
The Harry Caray statue's saying is just an unintelligible string of syllables that oddly reeks of Budweiser.
I dont see what the problem is. Grammar Nazi's
Give them a break. It's been a tough century. It clouds the mind.
Your retarded
I'm sure they will have a similar problem when it comes time to erect the next statue of a Cubs legend, after all, how many o's are there in the word WHOOOOOO!?!?!?
@Secret Identity: I see what you did they're.
These were the same boneheads that messed up the Gehrig monument. Let's just an 'L' got replaced with an 'F'.
Its defiantly a good idea to run spell check or your a looser.
/yeah, I know, I'm the kettle.
Not to be confused with the planned inscription on the Lou Piniella Memorial Statue: "LETS KERRY WOOD CLOSE, FOR SOME REASON."
So engravers don't work on a contingency plan?
Who's bright idea was that?
They found the apostrophe. They thought the quote was sponsored by "Ernie's Bank."
Irregardless, its still a nice statute.
@UkraineNotWeak:
"Give them a break. It's been a tough century. It cloud's the mind."
Fixed.
"Let's play, too"?
This is shaping up to be Emmitt Smith's favorite thread ever.
thats rediculous
@Secret Identity: It's "they're"! God, your so stupid!!!
@Gourmet Spud: They did the same thing at the Lincoln Memorial. Was supposed to be an F, and it was an E.
So I take it the problem is they spelled the word "lose" p-l-a-y? Wow, they weren't even close...
It slipped through because nobody etched a red line under LETS.
"No, money down!"
@McCroskey: Not in the last 101 years...
The Michael Jordan statue at United Center tells you to take Memphis and the points.
The statue makes sense, for all intensive purposes.
I always thought this was a condensed version of the statement Ernie Banks made to Jackie Robinson while watching the 1946 All Star Game; "Why won't they let us play, too," so I was too busy laughing at the wrong misspelling and lack of a comma to even appreciate what was really going on.
In fairness, Will, if you were engraving the statue, you would have forgotten to close one of the tags at the end and the whole freaking statue would have been a hyperlink to Fire Joe Morgan.
@Suss--:
No¿ Money down;
At ND it used to say "Play like a champion today" until they fixed it this year to say "Play like a bunch of assholes today."
@futuremrsrickankiel: Wow. +1
The George Mikan statue inside the Target Center has a huge bulge and he was a white guy. Talk about a mistake!
Am I right?
@futuremrsrickankiel: Good job their
Think anyone would've noticed it while pissing on it?
Who knew they even had copy editing chiselers?
@futuremrsrickankiel:
In fairness, Will would've had Rick or AJ take care of it.
Hopefully nobody notices the sign out front- "Riggly Feild."
@ClueHeywood: The Stan Mikita statue just weeps.
This mistake does not bode well for the eventual Kosuke Fukudome statue.
I prefer "Let us play more than one", but it didn't fit as nicely.
Use guys don't know what you are talking about. It looks fine to me.
This is just like that episode of The Flinstones - you know the one.
Whats the deal with Ovaltine?
@ClueHeywood: The guy doing the Zambrano statue will have arm trouble. And don't get me started about the Kerry Wood memorial.
@J-No:
That's because you're Italian.
Moises Alou now admits that, apostrophe or no apostrophe, he would not have understood what it meant anyway.
@J-No:
You know, for the longest time I thought "Youse" was a Northern Ontario, Canada thing. Turns out I was so very wrong.
"Its" a Cubs-related affliction.
Granite, mistakes were made. But we will fix it.
NERDS!!!!!!!!!!
@Stev D: Not you too, dude.
