Buried in a fun interview with Slate sports editor Josh Levin was this amazing tidbit about the Washington Wizards' promotional team:
I went to a Wizards game the other night, and despite the fact that Gilbert Arenas made a surprise return to the lineup, the crowd was comatose for pretty much the whole night. When the Bucks shot free throws, the Verizon Center crew put up a collage of Duke images — Paulus, Coack K, etc. — on the scoreboard to get the crowd to boo, and it worked like magic. I'm not kidding. That really happened.
OK, that's freaking brilliant. Pumping up the crowd to be angry and loud by simply showing images of Duke. We knew Duke was unpopular. We didn't know they were that unpopular.
Needless to say, the Wizards have no Dookies on their roster.

Yeah, but it gets annoying. During Dallas week they started flashing the Cowboys star and pictures of Jerry Jones. Unfortunately they kept it up for the next month after that as well.
At first they tried Billy Packer, but there was rioting.

I've been to a couple of wizards games over the years and it's amazing how the fans really support former terps and most anybody who's played in the ACC. Except for Dookies...

I actually watched the Big Ten Network (!) the other day just to see Michigan beat them circa 1989. Simply glorious.
It's not by coincidence that the World Trade Center was twice attacked after Duke won the NCAA Men's Tournament. Duke hatred has no bounds.

I might have thought the hatred went too far, but then I made two mistakes - going to law school and going to a law school where a lot of people went to undergrad at Duke.

@Unsilent Majority: Yep. I was at the game the Sat. night before the Redskins-Cowboys game and it seemed funny. Less so a month later.

If they want people to boo, why dont they just hire Isiah Thomas?
Remember it was the Verizon Center where Duke bit it to WVU a couple weeks ago. I hope every one of you can share the experience of a Duke tourney loss some day. I could only marvel at how Duke tears smell like how I imagine heaven.
