While Mitch Albom was gushing over what a selfless mensch Chris Osgood is on the Sports Reporters this morning for gracefully stepping aside when the Red Wings signed Dominik Hasek, he conveniently ignored the cheap shot Osgood took with the butt-end of his stick to the Stars' Mike Ribeiro at the end of regulation last night in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
Even though Ribeiro retaliated, it would be hard to envision any reaction from the league that doesn't come down heaviest on the goalie. Granted, Osgood has been in net for all of the Red Wings eight consecutive playoff wins and it helps to only have to make 17 saves.
Detroit made up for the loss of center Johan Franzen for the first of two games with a concussion by getting first-period goals by Darren Helm and Henrik Zetterberg. In a series where the Stars look altogether outclassed, a possible suspension of a hot goaltender could be just the thing to help swing a series as it heads to Dallas.

The only recognition Osgood shold get is for his Oscar caliber dive after receiving the two-hander to his chest protector (stops 90+mph shots but caves under a love-tap?!?!). This in a game where Turco takes out Filpula's skates behind the play, etc. etc.
Much ado about nothing. The league is the only one getting the butt end of anything if any suspensions are handed out period. On to game 3. PLEASE!
I hadn't seen the butt-ending. Would you guess Osgood and Ribeiro are both gone for Game 3 and/or 4?
Somehow, I think Detroit manages with Hasek or Jimmy Howard.
But if a steamrolling Evil Empire Red Wings team plays Le Legende de Sid le Kid in the Finals, Versus should be cackling as the 3.0 ratings roll in...
if that is what passes for a butt-end these days then the league is getting soft. Osgood barely even clipped him...weak.
Glad to see Osgood is picking up some pointers from Hasek.
I watched the play when it was live. Osgood stood up, the game was over, and there was some chippiness. Ribiero could've skated well wide of the goaltender and avoided everything...it wasn't as though he was pushed into the net. And there was no force on Osgood...it's not as though he pushed the butt into Ribiero's face, as opposed to Ribiero's swing.
I'll also admit that Osgood definitely sold that slash. But I definitely think Ribiero's gone and Osgood isn't. You can make a decent case that the butt hit was an accident. You can't for Ribiero.
Osgoood...Italian soccer player dive...and so on.
@Joe Hass: I'd like to hear that case
Jesus, is this what I can expect from Deadspin now? It's like you guys have never watched a hockey game before. Every goalie in the league sticks out his stick in that situation. It's very clear, Ribiero's sole intent was to injure Detroit's best player. If the league doesn't supend Ribiero for game three, McCarty should make sure he can't play game four.
Sorry, Ape. That's nothing on Osgood there.
Okay, well, not much on Osgood there. Still not a butt-end hit, more of a go-away warning.
My Pens would be glad to wipe that feel-good smile of Mitch Albom's face for him.
Billy Smith would have laughed in Ribiero's face after that slash. And then followed that up by kneeing Turco in the groin.
@CMU_Bueller: And Ott should make sure Osgood doesn't make it past game four as well. Accidently forget to stop going to the net anyone??
Ron Hextall is not impressed.
Ribiero should expect nothing different if he wants to make a run at Lidstrom after the horn the rest of the series. Any goalie would have his stick out in that situation, don't charge behind the net after the horn. Ass.
@SonofSpurrier: Have you ever watched a game of hockey in your life? Every goalie at almost every level of the game does that. Ribiero is a hack.
I couldn't tell from that clip, did Osgood get sand in his vagina?
Mitch Albom <<<<<< Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels
@CMU_Bueller: Besides playing hockey since I was 3, then no...I haven't. Goalies will put out to protect themselves, but don't go out that far to try and hit the guy.
@HockeyMountain: I didn't see any motion of the stick prior to the initial hit. He didn't go out of the crease. The horn sounded, so I can see him standing up at that point.
I can't read Osgood's mind. I can only tell you what I saw, and if you're comparing what Osgood and Ribiero did, a deliberate swing of the stick versus put his stick out and having someone else skate into it is night and day.
Osgood deserves at least a two game suspension. One game for a deliberate attempt to injure and one game for diving. If he had tried that play in the Montreal Forum, all the old Frenchmen would be yelling over the glass, "Embelishmont, embelishmont!" (it's ok for Montreal Canadians to take dives but someone from the other team, mais non).
