The Royals TV Broadcast Had A Half-Inning Of Silence For Fred White
Fred White was the radio voice of the Royals for 25 years, and remained close to the team until his sudden death yesterday, at the age of of 76. During last night's game, he was given the perfect tribute: silence, and baseball.
An entire generation of Royals fans grew up passing nights with the voices of White on color and Denny Matthews doing play-by-play. (Matthews is still with the team, the longest-tenured broadcaster behind only Vin Scully.) White was controversially fired in 1998, though harbored no hard feelings—it's impossible to find a young broadcaster, even his replacement, who had anything but the highest of praise for him.
White officially retired on Tuesday, and a day later, passed away from complications related to his advanced melanoma. Last night, Fox Sports Kansas City's broadcast team went quiet for the first half-inning of the Royals' game in Anaheim.
