Ja'Quayvin Smalls, a junior defensive back for Western Carolina, collapsed during a voluntary offseason workout yesterday and later died a local hospital. No cause of death has been determined so far.
Players were running sprints in the school's football stadium when Smalls complained of cramps and left the drill to stretch. While on the sidelines he quit breathing and team trainers administered CPR before transferring him to a hospital in Sylva, North Carolina, where he was pronounced dead. Smalls transferred to WCU this year after two seasons at Georgia Military College.
