Last Night's Winner: Kevin Kolb's Chances Of Starting
In sports, everyone is a winner-some people just win better than others. Like the candidate for the Eagles QB job who wasn't just placed at the scene of a shooting, thanks to some handy surveillance camera footage.
All along, Vick's story was that he had left his 30th birthday bash at a Virginia Beach restaurant long before the shooting of Quanis Phillips, one of Vick's co-defendents in his dogfighting case. Sure, maybe a guy got shot, but you can't blame VIck for anything! (Even though terms of his probation prevent him from associated with his co-defendents, or any felons at all.)
Well, not so fast. Allen Fabijan, spokesman for the Guadalajara restaurant, says security tapes caught a different story, and have been turned over to police. He said that Vick and his entourage left the party three minutes before shots rang out — from the direction he had driven.
You can see everybody duck at 2:10," Fabijan said of bystanders on the video. "I'm not saying that Michael Vick did the shooting. But he did not leave (long) before" as [Vick's attorney Larry] Woodward said his client told police Monday.
Woodward's gone 0-for-2 with CYA claims. He had also told police that club security had earlier removed Phillips, so clearly the shooting was unrelated to Vick's party. Fabijan denies that as well, saying no one was ejected all night.
So while none of this is particularly damning for Vick, if true, it would show he lied to the police. Completely guilt-free men, especially ones on probation, tend not to lie to the police. And even if nothing comes of it, how can you expect the Eagles, or any other prospective employer, to commit good money to someone who's shown he can't stay out of trouble even when the eyes of the world are upon him?
What's Vick's attorney's strategy now, after his client's story has been contradicted? To make vague threats apparently (and keep in mind he's essentially threatening video footage).
I stand by what I said, that Michael was long gone before the shooting, does not know who did the shooting and had nothing to do with the shooting," Woodward said Tuesday. "Anyone who says any different better be very careful."
