Panionios Fans Destroy Their Own Stadium To Stop Rivals AEK Athens Playing In It
Dundee United's Europa League clash with AEK Athens tomorrow night has been thrown into chaos after rival fans from Greek side Panionios G.S.S. smashed up their own stadium to prevent the game being held there.
The fixture was originally set to be played at Olympiakos' ground, since the freshly laid turf at AEK's Olympic Stadium was hacked into an unplayable state by roommates Panathinaikos, but the idea was ruled out over fears rival fans might clash.
AEK eventually agreed to take over Super League side Panionios' stadium. However, disgusted home fans got wind of the deal and last night over 100 staged a sit-in at the club's offices, before moving into the stadium and F-ing S up.
The bad blood stems from Panionios having beef with AEK over some unpaid debts, which were only recently settled.
Yahoo Sport report an AEK spokeswoman said:
There was damage but nothing has changed so far. It's not as bad as it looks ["LOL."], although I accept it looks bad in the photographs.
Unsurprisingly, something has changed, namely the match being moved straight back to Olympiakos' stadium. To make things worse for AEK, according to the BBC, the Greek club's [totally innocent] fans could now be banned from the match altogether.
