Inside The Nation’s Dorkiest Fanbase: How The Washington State Cougars Flag Gets On GameDay Each Week
No matter where ESPN's College GameDay films, there's always a Washington State flag in the background. It's a Cougar tradition, and it doesn't happen by magic. We got our hands on the secret manual WSU fans use to coordinate their camera-bombing.
The tradition only dates back to 2003, but the flag is just as much a part of College GameDay as Chris, Lee or Kirk.
"If GameDay won't go to Pullman," reasoned the denizens of the Cougfan.com message boards, "then we'll go to GameDay."
Every week, the flag is mailed across the country to volunteer Cougfan operatives. But once they've received it, it's not a simple matter of strolling on camera. Here, presented in public for the first time, is the official Cougfan instruction manual for care and comportment of the WSU flag.
