Learn The Story Behind A Little-Known Sport Called 9-Man
9-Man is a sport predominantly played in the Chinatown sections of North American cities. It's sort of like volleyball, but with some dunk-like moves and other craziness, too.
It was played primarily in alleys and parking lots in Chinatown and became popular in the 1930s as a way for chinese immigrants and laborers to fraternize with each other, at a time when they were excluded from doing so with the majority of the public. Beginning in 1944, a yearly tournament was held over Labor Day Weekend. It has since become less a social event and more a serious athletic endeavor. This year's tournament will be held in Las Vegas.
Tomorrow, 9-Man, a documentary detailing the history of the game, will premiere in Boston. You can check out the trailer above.
