Double Plane Crash Survivor Austin Hatch Scores First College Point

On June 15, 2011, Austin Hatch signed a commitment to play college basketball at Michigan. Just a nine days later he was involved in a plane crash that killed his pilot father and stepmother, and resulted in him being put into a medically induced coma. This was eight years after he and his father survived a plane crash that killed his mother and two siblings.

Tonight Hatch did something most probably thought impossible three years ago, something with great symbolic importance: he scored his first point for the Michigan Wolverines. It was just one free throw—not as thrilling as the three-pointer he hit in his first high school game back after almost three years—but the fact that Hatch was even on the court to be able to make it in the first place is the most remarkable thing of all.
