So It's Come To This: Mets Fans Wearing Paper Bags
Things are coming to some kind of head in Flushing. Wednesday, fans begin to show up with brown paper bags over their heads, probably the most evocative visual for this team since that Even the media started tuning the losses out.
But, hope! Manager Terry Collins got himself ejected into last night's game, making a statement in advance of a 9-1 stomping of the team with the second worst record in baseball. (The Mets are still in dead last.) Jason Bay is back!
And now GM Sandy Alderson is looking on the bright side:
Regarding the fans who showed up this week wearing bags over their heads, the optimistic Alderson said, "As I recall it, that phenomenon originated in New Orleans and not too long ago they won the Super Bowl, so things do change."
So at the end of the season, we'll look to these few days as the moment the Mets turned things around. Or, continued on through a 70-win season mostly devoid of highlights.
