Please Welcome Eric LeGrand To The Ranks Of The Sports Media
Paralysis for an athlete is horrible. (It's horrible for everyone. It's probably the worst thing that can happen to a human body. I'm terrified of what I consider a fate worse than death. Consider this post a living will: if I'm paralyzed, just end it for me.) But it's especially cruel for an athlete, and not only in a Housman sort of way. An athlete playing FBS ball presumably wants to spend his life in sports in some form or another—if not playing pro, then coaching somewhere. But a spinal injury like the one that felled Eric LeGrand is the one freak occurrence that instantly makes being a part of the sports world almost impossible.
So we're truly, genuinely happy for LeGrand that he's found a way to stay involved in what he loves. LeGrand will be part of the Rutgers Radio Network, working pregame, postgame and halftime segments for every Scarlet Knights game this year, in addition to doing analysis for SNY. And once he dispenses with the minor inconveniences of standing and walking (it's just a matter of time), he's going to finish his communications degree and make a life for himself in the world of sports broadcasting. We wish him the best. If his injuries haven't gotten him down, maybe he can be the first journalist to avoid turning into a bitter old coot.
