Manny Pacquiao Says Gay Marriage Would Be Like "The Days Of Sodom and Gomorrah"
Manny Pacquiao fights Timothy Bradley, Jr. next month, and because it's not Mayweather, no one really cares. But Pacquiao has found another, more novel way of making headlines: speaking out against same-sex marriage at a time when the country is talking about little but. (Even Nets owner Jay-Z has weighed in.)
Pacquiao's a practicing Catholic, and it won't surprise you that he turns to religion to argue his side. From an interview with the given at his home after an hourlong Bible study session, Pacquiao says
"God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other.
"It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old."
Okay, so, who cares what a professional athlete things about social issues? Perhaps the 93 or so million residents of the Philippines, where Pacquiao is a member of congress. A staunch conservative in a socially conservative country, Pacquiao vocally opposed a bill that would have made condoms available to the poor—again, citing God. It's not easy being a hard drinker and bigtime gambler who occasionally partakes in bloodsports while keeping the world from going back to Sodom and Gomorrah.
