Braves Fans Attack Umpires With Garbage After Worst Infield Fly Call Ever
Havoc broke loose in the eighth inning of tonight's Cardinals-Braves wild card game after a late—and terrible—infield fly call on a popup to left field that St. Louis couldn't corral.
The misplayed ball should have resulted in Atlanta loading the bases with one out in a game St. Louis was leading 6-3 at the time; instead, the result left the Braves with two outs. The infield fly rule states it is only to be called on catches an infielder can make with "ordinary effort." ( Better know offending umpire Sam Holbrook.)
An ecstatic crowd in the moments after the ball dropped quickly turned angry, showering Turner Field with garbage—much of it targeting the umpires responsible for the call. TBS reported one was hit by a "small liquor bottle." The Braves petitioned to play the game under protest, arguing umpires did not interpret the infield fly rule properly. Sports hasn't seen a blown call this bad since, well, two weeks ago. [TBS]
