Boston College Suspends Women's Soccer Player For Tweeting Penn State Sandusky Jokes
Boston College is scheduled to play at Penn State tonight in the second round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament. Stephanie McCaffrey, a sophomore and a second-team all-ACC forward who had scored a goal in BC's first-round win over Hofstra, prepared for the trip to State College by tweeting a bunch of jokes about Jerry Sandusky and Penn State and its locker rooms. Because no one would notice that.
ESPN reported that McCaffrey had sent out 10 different tweets in about 24 hours, with her gig finally concluding around 4 p.m. yesterday. The gags didn't go over so well: By 5:15, McCaffrey had taken down her Twitter account. And a short time after that, BC suspended her for tonight's game. Onward State captured three of McCaffrey's tweets, and here's one of them (click to enlarge):
In a statement, BC's athletic director, Brad Bates, said, "The student-athlete used very poor judgment and exhibited insensitivity towards Penn State for which she apologizes. This type of behavior is not tolerated among our student-athletes." BC clearly overreacted here. It really should have punished McCaffrey for being so unfunny.
