Stompin' Tom Connors, Of "The Hockey Song" Fame, Dies At 77
Iconic Canadian country-folk singer Tom Connors passed away yesterday at the age of 77, from what a spokesman described as natural causes. He had a long and prolific career, focusing almost solely on his home country, but Connors gain sport-wide fame with 1973's "The Hockey Song."
The song took more than two decades to become a standard, first being used in-arena at Senators and then Maple Leafs games in the late '90s. It's since become ubiquitous, appearing in promos, commercials, and at rinks everywhere. Here's Connors performing "The Hockey Song" on Parliament Hill in 1993, to celebrate Montreal winning the Stanley Cup—the last Canadian team to do so.
