Dennis Wideman Suspended 20 Games For Checking Linesman
Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman made his case at his disciplinary hearing yesterday, and the NHL did not buy it. Director of hockey operations Colin Campbell handed down a 20-game suspension for hitting linesman Don Henderson from behind on Jan. 27.
If he serves that 20-game ban, Wideman will forfeit nearly a quarter of his annual salary.
There may still be a ways to go. Wideman has the right to appeal to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and if Bettman confirms a suspension of at least six games, Wideman can take his case before a neutral arbitrator.
