Pete Carroll And Macklemore Are BFFs And It's Totally Weird
Pete Carroll wants you to know he was into Macklemore before you'd even heard of him, you poser.
"I walked down into a team meeting and asked, 'Has anybody ever heard of a group called Macklemore?' Two guys raised their hands. Nobody knew him in our little world. And 15 months later, here he is."
The relationship between the 30-year-old rapper and the 62-year-old coach goes back a while, and it's likely to make you feel all sorts of things, none of which will be an increased urge to root for the Seahawks. It all began last fall when Carroll heard a song on the radio, loved, it, and asked his poor assistant to "research" the artist. It turned out to be Macklemore, and when Carroll learned he was a Seattle native, the brohugfest was on.
From an L.A. Times story profiling their deep and abiding respect for each other:
Carroll bought an album and spent much of last season playing it on an endless loop in his Seahawks office. Typically, the coach has his sound system cranked so loud his secretary has to turn it down when he steps out of his corner office.
Picture "Thrift Shop," on repeat, blaring through the Seahawks facility at all times. Goddamnit, Pete Carroll.
One thing led to another. Carroll went to the kickoff show of Macklemore's 2012 tour. The Seahawks started using "Can't Hold Us" as their touchdown song, as well as the music for their 2013 hype video. Macklemore has watched games from Carroll's private suite, and was on the sidelines as the Seahawks punched their ticket to the Super Bowl.
The two tweet at each other all the freaking time, which seems wrong.
Last night, as just about everyone was blasting the Grammys for Macklemore beating out Kendrick Lamar for everything, Pete Carroll was overjoyed.
They're both 9/11 truthers:
So naturally Macklemore emerged as a topic of conversation at Carroll's press conference today. The love-in rages on:
"He's just a cool coach and down-to-earth person," Macklemore has said of Carroll, and you are going to be sick of both of these men by week's end.
