Kia Ora from New Zealand. I like sports and shit, but you fellows are talking a completely different language. So I'll just creep around and understand one post in six. *sigh*.
Night All. We really need to make a name for all the late night DUANer's who make it past 3 AM. Something awesome, like the Wrecking Crew or the Murderizers. Think about it. Peace.
@MarissaExplainsItAll: For the last time, great grampa was from Germany, but he never served in the military. Gramps was actually in charge of Oskar Schindlers factory in Germany, believe it or not. They just cut him out of the movie.
@MarissaExplainsItAll: Ew. This works better with the ladies of Jezebel, because as women age they are not very fuck worthy. Men on the other hand? We just get cooler.
James Spader's character in Boston Legal (who along with Shatner are pretty damn cool) said it best, with his patented half-deadpan/half-disgusted sneer: "As we get older we get...fat and undesirable..."
@Chris Hanson's Axe And Chris Hansen's Ask: Yeah, but he and Cherry made a half-decent couple. Plus, Half-Sack ain't a complete wuss - he looked pretty scary in the ring.
@Craig Eshericks Mustache: I mean emotionally. I'm betting about half a season from now when they're running out of ideas they'll make her turn on him somehow.
@Shakεy: Honestly, there was a half-second period (before I scrolled down) where I thought you might have posted a picture of a penis. Not sure what that says about anything.
@Token_Tennis_Fan: I feel pain for you. I grew up where Travis Barker and Alien Ant Farm are from, so the douchebag thing I was talking about, mainly their brothers/ cousins.
@MarissaExplainsItAll: At least then you'd get the Aquabats, blink-182 and AAF (ok, two outta three ain't bad)...I'd take those over OAR- and living in Columbus- any day.
@K-Gun: hahahahah 16 yrs of the IE and you either turn into a meth head or you fucking pack up and leave. I have ADHD and meth doesn't work for me, so guess which one I chose?
@Token_Tennis_Fan: I think the percentage failure rates might not bear that out.
@MarissaExplainsItAll: Not everyone who wants to jump is in a desperate situation, and whether lives are better is an admittedly complex question. Then again, there's nothing barring a HS kid who wants to earn from playing pro in Europe before coming back for the NBA.
@Craig Eshericks Mustache: Hopefully less tragic. There's some anxiety about how playing in Europe will pan out until someone who didn't playing in college makes the transition back. But I bet you're right; it's just a matter of time.
But the question about playing in Europe doesn't necessarily make that much sense to me. Ricky Rubio's going to be highly sought after, right? He developed over there. Talent will out, I think - and if Americans come to believe they can make more-than-decent money while getting solid prep for the NBA, I think it might happen more.
Not too different from us trying to get our soccer players into Premier League, etc. teams, right?
@Craig Eshericks Mustache: Yeah, I just feel that it is difficult to build a fan base when you're playing in Europe. Places that have no nearby pro-teams will often follow players. Again, to call back UK, I follow the Pistons and Celtics in large part to follow guys I grew up watching. I can tell you where I was when Tayshaun got his 5 3 pointers in a row against UNC. So, while a player may get prepared for the NBA, there is something to be said for the hype-building and fandom that can come with playing in college, especially if the team gets to the Final Four. Both advertisers and the NBA have a stake in that.
Still, this may be an empty point. There won't be many people who can make it through the European route. College will still have its place in molding talent.
To sum: I agree with you, and my cynicism may be showing.
@Ailanthus-altissima: I think that if/as Stern's attempt to globalize the NBA brand works/starts to work, even Americans who play abroad first can bring enough fans with them (maybe not on the level of Yao, but something similar).
As for how you turned into a Pistons/Celtics follower, I get that. But for the other people who root for the laundry already, I think it might not matter where the new kids come from, so long as they're good.
It'll be interesting to see what happens, though, because making it in Europe probably requires as much if not more willpower than does developing in college/surviving the prep-to-pro jump.
@Craig Eshericks Mustache: I agree that it won't matter where the players come from when you already love a team, but I still think that there is a substantial number of player-followers. If the globalization of the NBA does work, then this won't be an issue - people could still follow the local kid, and people with strong pro-team connections won't care. At the core, I think it comes down to me being skeptical of the globalization of the NBA. If it happens, I think that Europe will become a much more appealing option.
I'm excited to see how it plays out, too. I wonder how that willpower to succeed in Europe plays into it. Some may see it as easy money, while others realize that they're so hyped in the United States, that they perceive the transition for them from high school to college to NBA to be easy. I think Wall is under this impression. He is already creating headlines, and from what I've read, he doesn't consider Europe an option. How he'll actually work out in college is unknown (the people calling him a transcendent, once in a generation talent make it seem like he's a lock to succeed), but it'd be interesting to compare him to Jennings - they were both No 1 ranked PGs.
@Craig Eshericks Mustache: That's a good question. I think that there is a more obvious way of measuring the performance of a SG/SF than a PG. Still, I think there might be higher expectations for a PG. He's both the play maker and also needs to be able to shoot when the team needs. Look at the Rose-Rondo show-down this past Saturday. They dominated the game, each of them leading their teams in both points and assists. PGs are the keystone, so while their performance may be harder to judge directly, they have more on their shoulders.
Also, since European ball does differ from NBA, I wonder if the transition would be harder for a PG then an SG/SF. Thoughts?
I hope this is clear enough. I think the hour is starting to get to me.
@Craig Eshericks Mustache: Well, I have a lot of huge data files. Complex graphs, excel spreadsheets that have reached the limits of the format, source code for programs, large picture files. All for work. My current computer is bogged down with statistical programs and other sundry sciencey programs.
@Ailanthus-altissima: you can get a huge hard drive for nothing these days. Bought one last year for the company I was working for- 500gb on sale for $100. I have a 3yr old 160gb (I think) HD. I have 50gigs of music alone. Plus tons of extremely large files, a few ripped movies, etc. and I still manage to keep most things organized in there.
So I'd say pick a price, and go for it (I do not recommend Iomega- bad experiences w/ them)
