The Moment The Pirates Reached The Playoffs
This photo, by the AP's Charles Rex Arbogast, shows Russell Martin just after applying the tag to Nate Schierholtz for the final out of Pittsburgh's 2-1 victory of Chicago. With Mike DiMuro's punchout *, the Pirates are in the postseason for the first time since 1992.
The Pirates have sort of stumbled their way through the last few weeks, and the clinch came on a very Pirates sort of play—Marlon Byrd booted the ball in right, which is the only reason Schierholtz tried for home in the first place. Still, this is the way to break a two-decade-old curse that began when Sid slid. This time, the throw was on target.
