Minor Leaguer Plays All Nine Positions In Nine-Inning Game
After he played every position in the field in a single game over the weekend, you could say Indians farmhand Justin Toole is a nine-toole player, but only if you want to get punched in the kidney.
Toole, who has been as high as Triple-A in his four years in the minors, finds himself on the Class A Carolina Mudcats. And while he's not there for his bat— he's hitting .236 this season—he can play just about anywhere you want him. So on Saturday, for the Mudcats' "Toole Time" promotion (kidney punch!), Toole spent an inning at each position, including the ones he's not particularly good at.
Tool's never caught before, but took his crouch for a perfect eighth inning, no passed balls or anything. He took the mound for the ninth, only his second career inning of pitching, and allowed back-to-back home runs before settling down to close out a 4-2 victor.
"You think it'll be cool, not sure it'll happen, but it was a blast," Toole told MiLB.com. "As I get older as a utility guy I'll be able to say I did it." And when's the next time we'll ever see a box score like this one?
