Argentine Soccer Player Killed By Hooligans In Front Of Wife And Child
Franco Nieto, captain of Argentine third division club Tiro Federal, died from after injuries sustained in a beating at the hands of three hooligans. The attack took place immediately after a match against a rival team as Nieto, his wife, and their baby were headed to their car to leave.
Saturday's match pitting Tiro against Chacarita Juniors stood at 3-1 in favor of Tiro at about the 75th minute mark when a mass brawl broke out on the pitch. Eight players were red carded and the match was abandoned.
According to the Guardian, it was when Nieto and his wife and one-year-old baby were en route to their car when three Chacarita ultras set upon him. From the Guardian:
[Nieto's] nephew Pablo said: "People came to insult him. They kicked him and punched him. He tried to defend himself but he was struck violently in the head. He was operated on Tuesday and died today."
This article from the BBC says Nieto's killing is Argentina's 15th football-related death this year. Ultras are out of control.
