Ben Shelton went the distance before the No. 2 seed earned a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (7) victory over Kamil Majchrzak of Poland in the first round of the Swiss Indoors on Tuesday in Basel, Switzerland.

Shelton survived two match points while winning for the first time since the U.S. Open, where he bowed out in the third round with a left shoulder injury. The 23-year-old American, who hit 13 aces without a double fault, was a finalist at Switzerland last year.

No. 9 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada was a 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-6 (4) winner over American Marcos Giron, while fellow American Reilly Opelka earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sebastian Baez of Argentina. Other first-round winners included Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland, Marin Cilic of Croatia, Valentin Royer of France and Joao Fonseca of Brazil.

Norrie broke Rublev's serve in the second game of the third set, then broke again to advance on his first match point. Zverev avoided an upset by holding on for a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Great Britain's Jacob Fearnley.

No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy moved on with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia. Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo and Thomas Martin Etcheverry also advanced, as did Austria's Filip Misolic.
