Japan enter as the favorites in this matchup.
Japan settled for a 2-2 draw versus the Netherlands last time out.
Tunisia and Japan are seeking redemption after disappointing World Cup starts as they cross paths this Saturday at Estadio BBVA with both nations badly needing a win to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The Eagles of Carthage enter this matchup after losing 5-1 to Sweden while the Samurai Blue managed to settle for a 2-2 draw versus the Netherlands. Considering that both nations are already on the brink of elimination, expect Tunisia and Japan to push the pace and try to establish control early in this make-or-break showdown.

The Samurai Blue are opening as moderate favorites at the leading World Cup betting sites, and honestly, we’re slightly surprised the line isn’t wider. While the Tunisians controlled the possession in their previous match versus Sweden, they still lacked cutting edge in the final third as they moved the ball without enough urgency or penetration to truly unsettle Sweden’s defensive block. That inefficiency is exactly what raises our concerns here, especially against a Japan side that really does well when allowed to control transitions and punish slow recoveries.
Even worse is that Tunisia made a coaching change just days after that defeat, with Sabri Lamouchi dismissed following the 5–1 loss to Sweden and replaced by Herve Renard who now has very little time to steady the ship before this crucial Japan clash. Although Renard’s pedigree gives Tunisia a fighting chance, we like to think that the lack of familiarity between Renard and the squad could prove costly here and even potentially disrupt Tunisia’s defensive structure and in-game cohesion at a moment when stability is urgently needed.

Quite frankly, the Samurai Blue should’ve won versus the Netherlands, especially when you consider that they created the clearer chances in the closing stages and showed far greater composure in transition whenever the Dutch line dropped too deep. Against a Tunisian side that has recently undergone a turbulent reset, Japan should feel confident about controlling the tempo from the start with how they circulate the ball through midfield and pull compact defenses out of shape. Look for midfielders Ritsu Doan and Kamada to step into more advanced pockets and link directly with strikers Takefusa Kubo and Ayase Ueda to pressure Tunisia’s defense and create more opportunities to score.
Although Tunisia and Japan can make this a wide-open contest given their penchant to score from multiple areas of the pitch, we expect both nations to slow the tempo here and play more cautiously knowing what’s at stake. We honestly think that the emphasis here will likely focus on control rather than end-to-end chaos, with Japan likely moving the ball through the midfield and Tunisia looking to protect their defensive shape and limit space between the lines. Of course, they can always surprise us and turn this into a goalfest although we highly doubt it considering how both sides looked last time out.
If Japan does find a breakthrough here, we like to think that Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo will likely be the one to do it. The 25-year old Kubo was really impressive versus the Netherlands as he consistently found pockets of space on the right flank by driving at the Dutch back line and creating Japan’s most dangerous moments. One thing we like to see from Kubo here is a bit more variation in his decision-making in the final third by mixing those sharp inside dribbles with earlier and quicker releases into the box rather than always carrying the ball deep into traffic. What Kubo needs to do is to play earlier passes when Tunisia’s block is still shifting across and avoid over-dribbling into already congested central lanes where defenders can collapse on him so he can find more opportunities to actually shoot.
