Mandatory Credit: Mark Konezny-Imagn Images The Kansas City Chiefs confirmed a new long-term contract for guard Trey Smith on Tuesday, following reports that the sides were finalizing a four-year, $94 million extension.
The Chiefs did not reveal financial terms, but NFL Network and The Athletic reported the deal includes $70 million guaranteed and makes Smith the highest-paid guard in league history.
Smith, 26, was the only player in the NFL still on the franchise tag when the day began, and Tuesday was the deadline for those players to reach long-term contracts to override the one-year deal.
A Pro Bowl selection at right guard in 2024, Smith was set to earn $23.4 million on the franchise tag for 2025.
A sixth-round draft steal in 2021, Smith has started 80 games -- 13 in the playoffs. He has only missed one game through four seasons and is a two-time Super Bowl champion.
The only other NFL player who received a franchise tag this offseason was Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, who agreed to a four-year, $115 million extension in March.
