College Freshman Runs Wind-Aided 9.77-Second 100 Meters
Baylor freshman Trayvon Bromell crushed the competition this weekend at the Big 12 track & field championships, turning in a ridiculous 9.77 in the 100 meters—albeit with a wind reading that rendered the time ineligible for any records.
For context, know that the national collegiate record is 9.89 seconds, set in 2011. This year, only five 100m times have clocked below 10 seconds at all, wind-assisted races included. And here's your list of the fastest wind-assisted performances of all time:
1 9.68 +4.1 Tyson Gay USA 29.06.2008 2 9.69A +5.7 Obadele Thompson BAR 13.04.1996 3 9.72 +2.1 Asafa Powell JAM 04.06.2010 4 9.75 +3.4 Tyson Gay USA 25.06.2009 4 9.75 +2.6 Asafa Powell JAM 14.05.2010 4 9.75 +4.3 Darvis Patton USA 30.03.2013 7 9.76A +6.1 Churandy Martina AHO 13.05.2006 7 9.76 +2.2 Tyson Gay USA 02.06.2007 9 9.77 +2.1 Usain Bolt JAM 17.06.2009 10 9.78 +5.2 Carl Lewis USA 16.07.1988
That's pretty good company to be in. Bromell hails from St. Petersburg, Florida, and here's his reaction upon seeing the scoreboard. It's not clear if he's reacting with joy to the time or, more likely, the +4.2 wind reading that rendered it ineligible for records.
Trayvon Bromell is 18 years old. You'll be seeing plenty of him in the future.
