Davis Riley self reports penalty on distance-measuring device
May 1, 2025; McKinney, Texas, USA; Davis Riley plays his shot from the sixth tee during the first round of the THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson golf tournament. Mandatory Credit: Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images Davis Riley was assessed a two-stroke penalty for using the slope feature on a distance-measuring device during the weather-delayed second round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Riley self-reported the use of the slope feature, which is not permitted.
The two-stroke penalty on the par-3 17th hole dropped Riley to 3-under-par, one stroke back of the projected cut line at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. He started on the back nine, however, and mixed two birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the final 10 holes to shoot a 71 and sit at 5-under, leaving him above the cut line.
Riley, 28, previously has called a penalty on himself on the golf course.
Per PGA Communications, Riley was issued a one-stroke penalty at the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur after his ball moved as he addressed a birdie putt on the 16th hole. The then-16-year-old was awarded a bogeyed the hole, which ended the match against Scottie Scheffler, a 3 and 2 winner.
Riley has two career wins on the PGA Tour and currently is ranked 89th in the FedEx Cup standings.
