Mandatory Credit: Petre Thomas-Imagn Images Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is week-to-week with a sprained ankle sustained in practice on Sunday, the team confirmed Monday.
The two-time All-Star guard will miss Monday's preseason opener against the Detroit Pistons. The Grizzlies begin the regular season at home against the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 22.
Morant averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 50 games (all starts) last season.
Drafted No. 2 overall in 2019, Morant has career averages of 22.6 points, 7.4 assists and 4.7 rebounds in 307 games (305 starts). He was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2019-20, the Most Improved Player in 2021-22 and made the All-Star teams in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
Memphis is already dealing with injuries to forward Brandon Clarke (knee), forward Jaren Jackson Jr. (toe) and center Zach Edey (ankle).
