Gunner Kiel's Mom Recommits Him To Notre Dame
Gunner Kiel, the No. 2 high school quarterback prospect in the country and the only quarterback prospect who was probably named to one day be a top quarterback prospect—your time has passed, Colt McCoy—has decommitted from LSU, where he'd planned to enroll this week. Instead, Young Gunner heeded his mother's advice, and he's decided to play for Notre Dame's NBC contract next year.
It's the second turnaround for Kiel, who had verbally committed to Indiana last summer. His older brother, Dusty, was then playing football for the Hoosiers. Their older brother, Shooter, played QB for Illinois State.
(Just kidding. The eldest Kiel's name is actually Drew, which seems rather anomalous.)
Michael Scarborough of Rivals.com told the that Kiel's decision had come down to his mother Aleta's "emotional" plea for him to stay closer to home in Columbus, Ind.
"[Kiel] wants to come to LSU," Scarborough said, "but his mother got very emotional Monday and did not want her son to leave. He plans to enroll in classes at Notre Dame on Tuesday."
In a statement released by Notre Dame today, Gunner called the recruiting process a "roller-coaster ride," and said that he'd decided the Irish were "the perfect fit" for his needs: quality of education, comfort level with the school and program, and distance from home. Isn't that nice? Sometimes, kids who will one day have lucrative NFL contracts just want to make their moms happy. Sometimes.
