Mandatory Credit: David Banks-USA TODAY Sports Hayden Wesneski pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-hit ball and Michael Busch hit a two-run home run during the Chicago Cubs' 5-0 win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Sunday afternoon.
After getting shutout by the Angels on Saturday, the Cubs returned the favor in the final meeting of a three-game series. Chicago won the series, 2-1. Sunday's victory also marked the Cubs' third series win since May 1.
Los Angeles struggled at the plate, but managed to give Chicago a scare by loading the bases in the ninth inning. Chicago's Hector Neris recorded the one-out save, his 12th of the year, to preserve the victory.
Wesneski (3-5) had two strikeouts and one walk in the winning effort. He was relieved midway through the seventh inning, when the Angels threatened with two runners on base.
That was the only other instance where Los Angeles came close to scoring, but Cubs reliever Porter Hodge was able to get his team out of the jam and the Angels stranded runners on second and third base.
Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, after Miguel Amaya had an RBI single, and Nico Hoerner followed up with a sacrifice fly RBI.
The Cubs got another run in the fifth, when Busch grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.
Busch added a two-run home run, his 11th of the year, in the seventh inning. The Cubs had seven hits as a team.
Jose Soriano (4-7) was saddled with the loss for the Angels. Soriano gave up three runs on six hits over five innings. He also had three strikeouts and one walk.
Brandon Drury, Taylor Ward and Kevin Pillar recorded the Angels' lone hits of the game. Drury hit a hard grounder for a single in the first inning. Ward and Pillar each had infield singles in the ninth inning.
