Jalen Milroe Would Be the Perfect Quarterback Prospect if He Knew How To Pass

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is going viral for his unofficial 4.37-second 40-yard dash at his pro day.

It’s further evidence he would be the greatest quarterback of all time if he was even an average passer.

While the unofficial 4.37 might be a tad generous due to friendly stopwatches inside Alabama’s facility, there’s no denying Milroe looked quick—and shredded—at his pro day workout Wednesday afternoon.

Similar to top quarterback prospects Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, Milroe opted not to participate in the NFL scouting combine events in Indianapolis last month. Perhaps his 40-yard dash would have been a smidge slower on an official stopwatch.

But without pads on, Milroe certainly looks the part. While he was not always the starter, he’s played four seasons of college football and is still just 22 years old. Yet he’s projected as a second-round pick and more of a project prospect because of his inefficiencies as a passer.

As a freshman in 2021 and 2022, Milroe wasn’t receiving consistent snaps. But as a sophomore in 2023, he completed 65.8% of his passes. During his final year at Alabama, that percentage dipped to 64.3. He has 45 collegiate passing touchdowns to 20 interceptions.

At times, though, Milroe’s inability to move the ball downfield plagued Alabama. Freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams was able to work some heroics, but the explosive, NFL-caliber throws felt too few and far between.

Alabama finished 9-4 last season and 5-3 in the Southeastern Conference. While Milroe and new head coach Kalen DeBoer looked to be the perfect pairing, they just couldn’t get the job done consistently.

NFL teams will certainly be interested in Milroe. Reports indicate he’s already met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who will need a franchise quarterback eventually, regardless of what Aaron Rodgers decides to do.

At the moment, you could argue Milroe has the highest ceiling but the lowest floor of any quarterback in the 2025 class. But the ceiling is what made Lamar Jackson a first-round selection, an MVP winner and one of the faces of the NFL.

Milroe has that same speed and athletic capability that jumps off the tape. But he’s not a finished product. At his peak, Milroe could be an alien quarterback—one who develops as a passer and has the raw athleticism to take over a game.

It’s just up to the right team to draft, develop and surround Milroe with the right pieces to ensure success in the NFL.
