Key Points
  • DraftKings removes credit cards in response to legal pressures
  • The move shows a commitment to responsible gaming
  • Other sportsbooks like Fanatics also don’t accept credit cards

DraftKings no longer accepts any credit cards (including Visa and Mastercard) as payment methods for deposits on both U.S. online sportsbooks and casinos. The changes took effect on Monday, August 25, 2025.

DraftKings was fined $450,000 by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission in July 2025 for processing 1,000+ bets that were funded by credit cards. From February 2023 to 2024, there were approximately $83,000 in illegal-funded bets placed within the state.

The fine was issued because credit card payments were mistakenly permitted by DraftKings, which was a violation of state law that they self-reported to the Massachuetts Gaming Commission.

While other states allow credit card payments, the move to pull this banking method from deposit options was done to avoid any future violations of state regulations.

DraftKings’ commitment to responsible gaming

The removal of credit cards as deposit methods highlights DraftKings’ emphasis on player safety. It’s a decision that was made after DraftKings recently released a new responsible gaming tool called My Budget Builder, where users can track and customize spending limits.

Back in May 2025, DraftKings hired Lori Kalani as its first Chief Responsible Gaming Officer. The goal was to promote transparency and make responsible gaming embedded in DraftKings’ company culture.

Not only do users incur cash advance fees when depositing with credit cards, but it also opens up the possibility of problem gambling. This is because they’re essentially betting on credit rather than personal funds. Thus, by taking credit cards off their list of payment methods, it prevents DraftKings users from putting themselves into more credit card debt through sports betting.

With the removal of credit cards for deposits along with tools like My Budget Builder, DraftKings seems to be positioning itself as one of the industry leaders in responsible gaming.

Credit card payments vary by sportsbooks and state

The use of credit cards for betting payments depend on both state regulations and sportsbooks. For instance, users can still deposit money sports betting or online casino accounts with credit cards at the following sportsbooks:

  • FanDuel
  • Caesars
  • BetMGM
  • bet365
  • ESPN BET

However, there are currently 7 states that do not legally allow credit card payments at online sportsbooks or casinos:

  • New Hampshire – credit card payments banned since 2019
  • Oregon: 2019
  • Iowa: 2020
  • Tennessee: 2020
  • Massachusetts: 2022
  • Vermont: 2023
  • Illinois: 2025

The Illinois ban took effect in April 2025. It’s yet to be determined if more states will follow suit, and if sportsbooks will also force users to comply.

Potential industry impact

DraftKings’ move to ban credit card deposits could signal a shift in industry standards. Regulators in additional states are already reviewing payment restrictions as part of their responsible gaming frameworks, as seen in Illinois in April 2025.

If consumer response to DraftKings’ change proves positive in reducing problem gambling risks, other major sportsbooks like FanDuel, Caesars, and BetMGM may feel pressure to follow suit. This has already happened with Fanatics, which is another notable sportsbook that does not accept credit card payments. It remains to be seen if other operators will do the same.
