Key Points
  • Terry Rozier has yet to play in an NBA game this season
  • NBA regular season ends April 12
  • Rozier pleaded not guilty to illegal betting scheme charges

With the NBA Playoffs now weeks away, other media outlets are reporting that guard Terry Rozier’s name will not be included on the Miami Heat’s playoff roster. According to published reports, the Heat are expected to waive Rozier before the end of the regular season, which will create a roster spot for Miami’s postseason run.

April 12 is the final day of the NBA regular season, and playoff rosters must be set by 3 p.m. EST the following day.

Rozier was arrested back on October 23 for his alleged ties to a federal investigation into illegal sports-betting activity. There are allegations of insider betting.

Rozier is holding one of the Heat’s 15 roster spots but hasn’t played in an NBA game this season after the NBA placed him on leave following his arrest. He was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

With Rozier out, the Heat could add depth

The NBA placed Rozier on leave following his arrest. Even though he is not expected to play again this season, he is still holding a roster spot. Rozier is on an expiring contract that pays $26.6 million per season. He hasn’t appeared in an NBA regular-season game since April 2025.

By waiving Rozier, the Heat would gain roster flexibility and create some depth for the postseason. If the postseason started today, Miami would make the Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament. There are still 11 games remaining, including a March 23 home game against the San Antonio Spurs.

Miami acquired Rozier via a 2024 trade with the Charlotte Hornets. His NBA future remains uncertain at this point.

Where does Rozier’s federal case stand

During a December court appearance, Rozier pleaded not guilty to the charges he is facing tied to the illegal gambling case. The hearing took place in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. Rozier was released on a $3 million bond. As part of the terms of his release, Rozier is prohibited from gambling and contacting alleged victims, co-defendants, and witnesses.

Rozier’s attorney also filed a motion seeking dismissal of the federal charges, arguing that neither his client nor the bettors violated federal rules.

The NBA veteran guard is tied to an alleged betting scheme connected to March 2023 when he was still playing for the Charlotte Hornets. The investigation alleges that Rozier informed co-defendant Deniro Laster that he planned to exit the game with a reported injury. By making the early exit with a foot injury bettors who took the under on the Rozier player prop bets would win.

What happens next is to be determined as Rozier’s team is waiting for a federal judge to issue a ruling on the motion.
