Michigan iGaming earned over $300 million in revenue, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board. This was one of the highest-performing months of all time for Michigan sports betting. Online casinos continued to drive the growth, but sports betting revenue was the second-highest of the year, behind only January.
FanDuel remains the top operator in the Michigan market, followed by DraftKings. As is seen throughout the country, these two sportsbooks continue to dominate market share.
| Operator | Retail Partner | May Handle | May Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| FanDuel | MotorCity Casino | $139.5 million | $22.6 million |
| DraftKings | Bay Mills Indian Community | $108.2 million | $12.5 million |
| BetMGM | MGM Grand Detroit | $54.7 million | $7.4 million |
| Fanatics | Lac Vieux Desert Band | $30.7 million | $3.4 million |
| Caesars | Grand Travers Band of Ottawa and Chippewa | $24.4 million | $1.4 million |
| ESPN BET | Greektown | $15.8 million | $1.8 million |
BetMGM remains one of the top operators in Michigan, despite falling in the ranks in Pennsylvania and in the New Jersey sports betting market.
ESPN BET had more revenue in May than Caesars despite a significantly lower handle.
This data highlights a nationwide trend of both Fanatics and ESPN BET gradually rising in the ranks in market share.
Both Fanatics (February 2024) and ESPN BET (November 2023) are still relatively new operators in Michigan, so their continued growth to slowly overtake industry stalwarts like BetMGM and Caesars is worth noting.
May was the second time this year that gross revenue eclipsed $50 million in Michigan. Revenue increased from $42.8 million in May 2024 to $51.2 million this year.
| Month (2025) | Sports Betting Handle | Gross Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| January | $574.6 million | $85.6 million |
| February | $388.1 million | $46.8 million |
| March | $487.2 million | $33.5 million |
| April | $427.0 million | $43.0 million |
| May | $395.2 million | $51.2 million |
If looking to compare with 2024 data, May 2025 would rank as the fourth-most lucrative month, behind September 2024, November 2024, and January 2025. The successful month of May highlights how the NBA and NHL playoffs can drive revenue.
June 2025 likely was a slower month, as revenue dropped to $31.8 million in June 2024. The downward trend continued in July ($29.0 million) and August ($29.1 million), before picking back up in September ($59.2 million) due to the start of a new NFL season.
Using this historical data, we can reasonably project similarly slow months in 2025, since it’s a downtime of the sports betting calendar, with only the MLB season as the main highlight.
The NFL season is always the most eventful time of the year in the sports betting calendar, but even more so for Michigan. The Detroit Lions remain one of the Super Bowl favorites, so if they can go on a playoff run, expect January to be highly lucrative for the state.
Last season, the Lions were eliminated in the NFC Divisional Round, but the state still produced $85.6 million in gross revenue. If the Lions can get to the Super Bowl, it could be a record-setting month for sports betting revenue in Michigan.
