NCAA Hands Former San Francisco Men’s Basketball Player Lifetime Ban

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has shared its findings regarding sports betting violations connected to a former University of San Francisco men’s basketball player. The committee approved a negotiated resolution after an investigation uncovered sports betting violations committed by Marcus Williams, a former student-athlete and starting guard for the Dons men’s basketball team.

According to the agreement, Williams knowingly provided information to another men’s basketball student-athlete at a different school, who was betting on Williams’ performance via daily fantasy sports (DFS) platforms. The sports betting violations have resulted in permanent ineligibility for Williams.

What the Williams investigation revealed

Williams, like with other recent NCAA sports betting investigations involving student-athletes, did not cooperate. According to the findings, he knowingly provided false or misleading information to investigators.

The violations were discovered after the enforcement staff reviewed text messages for a separate infractions case. This one involved former Fresno State student-athlete Mykell Robinson. Records on Robinson’s phone indicated that there were nine occasions between November 2024 and January 2025 in which Williams knowingly provided information to Robinson. He was betting on Williams through DFS accounts.

According to the report, in each instance, Williams directed Robinson to take the over line on his performance.

Williams denied having a DFS account, which was under his name and email address.

The case has been resolved via a negotiated resolution in coordination with the University of San Francisco, per infractions process operating procedures. Williams participated and agreed to his violations.

Latest in a series of NCAA sports betting violations

The NCAA Committee on Infractions is having an extremely busy year regarding sports betting violations. So far, all of the student-athletes involved in the cases have received lifetime bans.

One involved former Temple Universiry guard Hysier Miller, who violated NCAA rules by placing dozens of sports bets, including three wagers against his own team. The review also revealed that Miller placed 42 sports wagers totaling around $473 over two seasons.

The Association also declared six other former men’s basketball student-athletes permanently ineligible. Former players were from Arizona State, Mississippi Valley, and New Orleans.

A closer look at the NCAA gambling policy

The NCAA runs one of the world’s largest integrity monitoring programs. When it comes to sports betting violations, there are strict penalties in place. Student-athletes who are found to have violated NCAA rules are ineligible and can only be reinstated with assistance of an NCAA school. Division I members revised the guidelines in 2023 regarding student-athletes and sports betting violations.

The biggest is the starting point of a permanent loss of eligibility whenever an investigation determines that a student-athlete has bet on their own games or shares information for betting purposes.
