The new year brought varying results for the Pennsylvania iGaming industry. While Pennsylvania gaming revenue continued its upward trajectory, taxable receipts generated from sports betting declined despite higher betting activity in the Keystone State.
According to the data published by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, total market revenue for gambling reached $529.1 million, which is a 10.9% increase of last year’s $477.2 million. This, however, wasn’t the case for sports betting receipts, which fell to 26.4% year-on-year to $51.5 million from $69.9 million in January 2024.
With Pennsylvania’s gambling revenue seemingly poised to outdo last year’s total, it begs the question of why sports betting revenues declined. The most surprising part was the fact that sports betting activity was extremely high to begin the year.
As per the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board data, total handle in January increased by 1.8% from last year to $873.1 million, including $830.5 million in online sportsbooks and $42.8 million at retail sportsbooks.
No clear reasons were established for the decline of sports betting revenues. However, the declining market share of established operators and penalties imposed on several sportsbooks could play a factor.
It hasn’t been long since the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board issued BetMGM a fine of more than $250,000 for 152 violations on the Pennsylvania Interactive Self-Exclusion List. The Pennsylvania Interactive Self-Exclusion List requires casino and sportsbook operators to enforce strict measures for preventing self-excluded individuals from interacting with the platform.
In response to the investigation that led to the fine, BetMGM acknowledged the violations, closed the affected accounts, conducted internal reviews, and enhanced security measures. BetMGM also donated $20,000 to the Pennsylvania Council on Problem Gambling.
Even though sports betting is experiencing a downward trend, the sports gaming industry still shows plenty of promise in Pennsylvania. This after its fantasy sports revenue grew by nearly 9% from $2.4 million in January 2024 to $2.6 million this year.
DraftKings Sportsbook remains the top fantasy sports website in Pennsylvania. However, Underdog Sports Inc. experienced the most growth after its revenue reached over $600,000. Meanwhile, Yahoo Fantasy Sports and Fantasy Sports Games LLC saw their revenues decrease by 15.3% and 11.7%, respectively.
With the Keystone State being home to some of the biggest teams in North American sports, fantasy sports will likely keep growing. This is especially more apparent with the current market expansion which indicates a sustainable appetite for fantasy sports betting.
Despite a poor revenue performance, Pennsylvania still remains a key player in the US sports betting industry. The state was one of the first to legalize sports betting. PA sportsbooks were also responsible for handling more than $8 billion in sports wagers in 2024.
Pennsylvania is also home to some of the most die-hard American sports fans with Philadelphia having sports teams such as the 76ers, the Phillies, and the Flyers, and Pittsburgh boasting the Steelers, Pirates, and the Penguins.
With the NBA and NHL seasons underway, there are plenty of things to be optimistic about a possible revenue increase in sports betting in the next few months.
Meanwhile, online gambling revenue in Pennsylvania surged nearly 41% year-on-year to $210 million. A lot of this growth can be attributed to the revenue generated from online slots, which reached $158.6 million. This increase represented a 44.2% increase from last year.
Meanwhile, internet table game revenue increased 32.7% to $48.9 million. Poker revenues, however, saw a slight 2.3% dip to $2.6 million. Poker spending wasn’t revealed by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. However, according to their data, consumers wagered roughly $4.23 billion on online slots in January and another $2.92 billion in table games.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National is still the top revenue-generating casino in Pennsylvania, hitting $79.7 million in total receipts, followed by Valley Forge Casino’s revenue of $57.6 million, and Rivers Casino Philadelphia, which took third with $53.4 million.
