Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announced enforcement action against dozens of online sweepstakes casino operators, alleging they were offering illegal gambling to state residents. The move targets platforms accused of using virtual currency systems to circumvent Tennessee’s gambling and lottery laws.
The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office identified the following online sweepstakes casino platforms as recipients of cease-and-desist letters. Each operator indicated it would comply with the order by removing unlawful features or discontinuing operations in the state:
The enforcement action is part of a broader effort by state officials to curb unregulated online gambling activity and ensure compliance with Tennessee law.
Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti emphasized that online sweepstakes casinos pose significant risks to consumers, arguing that these platforms are designed to appear legitimate while operating outside meaningful regulatory oversight.
“The only thing you can be sure about with an online sweepstakes casino is that it’s going to take your money,” Skrmetti said. “They work hard to make these sweepstakes casinos look legitimate, but at the end of the day, they are not. They avoid any oversight that could ensure honesty or fairness. Our Office was glad to chase these shady operations out of Tennessee and will keep working to protect Tennesseans from illegal gambling.”
Tennessee’s actions align with a broader wave of enforcement efforts across the country, as regulators grow increasingly concerned about platforms using sweepstakes terminology to bypass gambling laws.
The attorney general’s office warned that any sweepstakes casinos currently operating in Tennessee, or considering entry into the market, should expect enforcement action if they fail to comply with state law.
The enforcement action leaves Tennessee players with fewer options for online casino-style games, highlighting the gap between consumer demand and the state’s current regulatory framework.
With regulated online casinos unavailable in Tennessee, some players may seek alternatives outside the state’s legal system, increasing the risk of turning to offshore platforms that lack consumer protections.
These offshore sites often operate without transparency, responsible gaming safeguards, or dispute resolution mechanisms, leaving players exposed to unfair practices and potential financial harm.
The crackdown underscores an ongoing policy challenge: while enforcement aims to protect consumers, the absence of regulated online casino options may push some players toward higher-risk environments rather than safer, regulated alternatives.
