Nationals Game Canceled After Navy Yard Shootings
MLB just announced that tonight's scheduled Braves-Nationals game will not be played, after this morning's shootings at the nearby Navy Yard.
At least 12 were killed at the Navy facility, which is just blocks from Nationals park and shares a Metro stop. (See map here.) A parking lot at the ballpark is currently being used as a "reunion area" for employees to connect with family members, and many roads and facilities in the area are still in lockdown.
All of us here in the Nationals organization were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events that occurred this morning only a few blocks from Nationals Park. Our thoughts and prayers remain with our friends at the Navy Yard and those impacted by today's incident.
In light of the circumstances, we have decided to postpone tonight's game against the Braves. Additional information will be distributed in the coming hours.
As of earlier this afternoon, players were told the game was still on and were given directions for reporting to the ballpark, avoiding closed roads.
The game has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow, and will be the first of a split day-night doubleheader.
