Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports The Milwaukee Brewers broke up the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates' combined no-hitter in the bottom of the eighth on Thursday, with Jake Bauers opening the inning with a single, but the Pirates held on for a 1-0 win.
Pittsburgh starter Paul Skenes, a rookie making his 11th big-league start, no-hit Milwaukee through seven innings before Colin Holderman took over in the eighth and allowed Bauers to spoil the Pirates' bid at history.
Skenes (6-0) walked one while striking out 11. He also hit a batter and threw 65 of his 99 pitches for strikes.
Pittsburgh scored the game's only run when Yasmani Grandal ripped an RBI double in the seventh.
The Pirates haven't recorded a no-hitter since July 12, 1997, when Francisco Cordova pitched nine innings and Ricardo Rincon went one in a 10-inning, 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros.
