The Los Angeles Dodgers (69-43) just got swept at home by the Boston Red Sox, coming off an 8-4 loss on Sunday Night Baseball. They’ve now lost five of their last seven games as they look to snap out of this cold streak.
The Chicago Cubs (63-49) are coming off a 2-1 loss vs. the New York Yankees, which was their third loss in their last five games. With both teams on cold streaks, the question becomes: who should we trade on at MLB prediction markets? Let’s take a closer look.
The Dodgers are priced at 55 cents to win this game, which makes sense because they’re the best team in baseball, and the pitching matchup is relatively neutral.
They’re rolling with Justin Wrobleski, who has been a dependable innings-eater, but he’s coming off a poor outing vs. the Mariners, where he allowed five earned runs in six innings. But before that, Wrobleski gave up two earned runs or fewer in four of five outings. When he faced the Cubs on April 26th, he tossed six scoreless innings in a 6-0 win.
The Cubs are going with Matthew Boyd, who has been excellent lately. In his last three starts, he’s combined for only two earned runs in 20 innings. While it’s a tough matchup vs. the Dodgers, the good news for Boyd is that this is a cold lineup, combining for 10 runs in three games during their current three-game losing streak.
I’m taking Under 8.5 at 56 cents for the Dodgers vs Cubs game. Both Wrobleski and Boyd have the ability to pitch deep into games, putting less pressure on each bullpen. We already saw Wrobleski shut down the Cubs earlier this season, while Boyd is in a nice rhythm right now. Add in the fact that both offenses are cold, and Under 8.5 looks appealing here.
The Dodgers just acquired the reigning back-to-back AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal, giving up nothing off their big league roster in the process.
Dodgers’ catcher Dalton Rushing is day-to-day with an arm issue. He was replacing Will Smith, who is on the 60-day IL with a neck injury.
The Cubs made a big move on Sunday night, acquiring Blue Jays’ starter Kevin Gausman for two low-level prospects. Gausman is the frontline starter the Cubs desperately need.
Cubs’ utility man Matt Shaw remains out with a hand injury.
This matchup could be a potential preview of the NLDS.
The Dodgers opened as 53% favorites for this game. They’ve hovered around this price without much movement, currently at 55%. This makes sense because the Dodgers are always favored unless there’s a clear disadvantage for them in terms of starting pitchers. However, that isn’t the case tonight, as Wrobleski vs. Boyd is pretty even.
