The race for who will be named the MLB American League Rookie of the Year has taken a turn since the beginning of May. With more than $1.2 million in total trading volume, prediction market forecasters are arriving at a firm conclusion midway through the regular season.
Detroit Tigers shortstop Kevin McGonigle seems to be the most likely AL Rookie of the Year winner once the award is announced in November. Still, there are a couple of serious contenders who could challenge the 21-year-old phenom over the second half of the season.
The Detroit Tigers may be 9 games out of first place in the American League Central Division, but their shortstop has done nothing but impress so far in his rookie year. Kevin McGonigle graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in Pennsylvania in 2023 and immediately signed with the Tigers after they selected him 37th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.
McGonigle’s decision to forgo college and head straight to the pros has resulted in an outstanding rookie season, despite being offered a “full ride” scholarship by Auburn University. He may not be a “power hitter,” but a .281 batting average coupled with a stellar fielding percentage is good enough in the minds of Kalshi traders. He’s walked more times than he’s struck out and posted an elite 3.2 to 3.5 bWAR rating.
We’re going to pick up Kevin McGonigle contracts at 66¢ apiece to win the 2026 MLB American League Rookie of the Year. The award won’t be announced until November, but there’s not a lot of competition within the category right now due to the struggles of other contenders.
Japanese rookie standout Munetaka Murakami was previously favored to win this year’s AL Rookie of the Year award but has been recently plagued by injury. Murakami’s power is undeniable and the Chicago White Sox are competitive this year, but he will probably miss over 30 games this season due to an ongoing hamstring strain.
Murakami strikes out a lot, too. Once he suffered the injury on May 29th, the first baseman’s prospects for winning the American League Rookie of the Year award dropped significantly. The 26-year-old’s MLB debut has resulted in a great year, but it simply won’t match the production and consistency put forth by Kevin McGonigle. We don’t dare buy the “yes” contracts for Murakami (at 19 cents apiece) until he returns and shows that he can still hit the ball out of the park.
A good portion of the sports prediction market trading volume for this market occurred around May 29th when Munetaka Murakami suffered his injury. However, his growing number of strikeouts was already impacting the price, which got as high as 47 cents to win the AL Rookie of the Year award.
Starting Cleveland Guardians pitcher Parker Messick has likewise seen his shares drop, as it’s extremely difficult to win a season-based award when you only have an impact on approximately 20% of the regular season games. The last starting pitcher to win the American League Rookie of the Year award was Luis Gil of the New York Yankees in 2024.
