The Cleveland Cavaliers embarrassed the top-seeded Detroit Pistons on their home court Sunday. The Cavs are now set to compete against the New York Knicks Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
This year’s ECF will feature an alternating home court advantage for each game of the series, with Games 1, 3, 5, and 7 (if necessary) scheduled to take place at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza. Games 2, 4, and 6 (if necessary) will tip-off from the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in downtown Cleveland. The regular season series was won by the Knicks 2-1, with each team winning at home.
Despite their dominant effort in Game 7 against the Pistons, the Cavs missed 16 free throws and relied on woeful Detroit shooting to win comfortably. Kalshi traders aren’t convinced that Cleveland will have such an easy time against the Eastern Conference #3 seed.
The Cavaliers come in as a significant underdog to advance to the NBA Finals, with the Knicks enjoying plus-side trading on winning the ECF by more than 1.5 games. This makes sense given how New York has won seven straight playoff games since falling behind 2-1 in the opening series against the Hawks.
Forecasters are predicting that the Knicks will shoot much better than 30% from the field (which is what Detroit posted in its Game 7 wipeout loss). Cavaliers star James Harden was pretty much a non-factor in Cleveland’s Game 7 victory, going just 2-for-10 from the field and scoring only 9 points. The veteran will need to improve upon those numbers quickly in order to give the Cavs their best chance at upsetting New York in Game 1, scheduled for Tuesday night.
Both teams enter Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals relatively healthy. The Cavaliers’ Larry Nance Jr. missed Game 7 against the Pistons due to illness, but isn’t really a factor overall due to his non-starter status. The Knicks are expected to get OG Anunoby back by Tuesday night.
The bigger news perhaps is that Cleveland is reportedly poised to sign James Harden to a multi-year deal. The announcement comes just three months after the Cavaliers acquired Harden in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Still, Harden’s presence on the court will be under heavier scrutiny for Game 1 at Madison Square Garden after he went 0-for-6 in Sunday night’s win versus Detroit. At 36 years of age, the Arizona State alumnus is playing for his fourth team in as many years.
The Knicks win in five. That’s what prediction markets are saying in early trading. Kalshi forecasters can buy a 4-1 New York ECF series win for 25 cents.
That’s compared to the Cavaliers’ current pricing of a 4-1 ECF series victory (just 9 cents). Even though the Cleveland odds may seem like they present value at the moment, forecasters are unlikely to significantly improve the Cavs’ perceived chances unless they manage an upset over the Knicks in Game 1 Tuesday night.
The Eastern Conference Finals will tip-off at 8:00pm Eastern, live from Madison Square Garden. There’s still plenty of time to get your predictions in before Tuesday night, with plenty of volume for trades on win-loss, totals, and props.
The series winner between the Cavaliers and Knicks will go on to the 2026 NBA Finals, where they’ll meet either the San Antonio Spurs or the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
