If you had asked Kalshi traders whether they were interested in buying Philadelphia 76ers contracts to win the 2027 NBA Finals at 12 cents a month ago, the answer would have been a resounding “no.” But that was before news started circulating that LeBron James might choose Philadelphia as his next team.
As fate would have it, LeBron James will play his record 24th NBA season as a member of the 76ers via a 2-year, $8 million contract. As one might expect, NBA prediction markets have now priced the new reality into “yes/no” contracts related to which team will win it all next year.
If you thought traders would elevate the New York Knicks in the aftermath of their stunning NBA Playoffs achievements earlier this year, you thought wrong. The Philadelphia 76ers have now moved into third place on the Kalshi market tracker behind the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, bumping the Knicks down to fourth place in the process.
On paper, the 76ers are built to compete for a world title this coming season. LeBron James will give Philadelphia’s All-Star guards Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown increased support and a few moments of rest when they’re not holding the ball. The 76ers starting roster, with James, Maxey, Brown, Embiid, and Edgecombe, has the statistical power and veteran experience to power through the Eastern Conference.
But the big question for Kalshi’s 2027 NBA Finals winner market is whether the team has the potential to outperform the Spurs or the Thunder in a best-of-seven championship series. We still think the Spurs will win the NBA Finals next year, but don’t sleep on a “yes” option for Philadelphia to win the Eastern Conference Finals, thanks in part to LeBron James.
LeBron James wants to chase another NBA championship. He’s said as much in recent press appearances. The Philadelphia 76ers have the talent to make an extremely deep run in the NBA Playoffs, and James won’t be forced to contend with the Western Conference during a postseason run (until the NBA Finals).
Philadelphia’s geographic location, close to New York City, also played an important role in LeBron James’ decision. The two cities are separated by less than 100 miles along I-95, granting James and his loved ones easy access that can just as easily be achieved through a vehicular commute than a quick flight.
The 76ers weren’t on many traders’ radars a month ago, when they were listed at just 2 cents per contract to win the next NBA championship. Now that LeBron James is on board, forecasters will be lucky if they can secure “yes” options at just 12 cents per contract before the weekend.
The 76ers now see a clear path to reaching the 2027 NBA Finals through Cleveland, Boston, New York, and any other opponents. The real test may not come until they have to play against Oklahoma City or San Antonio for the world title, which would be the fifth for LeBron James.
